School Run Dangers

According to this story in the Halifax Courier, Siddal is one of six 'black spots' identified by Council officers where children are most at risk from poor parking and traffic problems when going to school. Which makes us wonder why we are having to fight so hard to make sure that the crossing patrol is retained now that the school has been combined onto a single site. More on this to come later .....
Library Reprieve Welcomed – But Councillors Pledge to Back Other Community Libraries

Town ward Labour councillors Tim Swift, Megan Swift and Bob Metcalfe have welcomed a Cabinet report which offers a reprieve to local libraries in Boothtown and Southowram. The two libraries were amongst ten libraries which were being ‘reviewed’ following a budget Council decision in 2005 to reduce the funding for small libraries.

New Speed Warning Device on Boothtown Road Planned

Local Labour councillor Tim Swift has welcomed news that Calderdale Council are to install a second vehicle activated speed sign on Boothtown Road later this year, in time for the start of the Autumn term at school.

The decision follows a petition, organised by local residents, which was presented by Cllr Megan Swift at the full Council meeting in April.

Inspectors Decision to Turn Down Phoebe Lane Appeals Welcomed by Local Councillors

Labour’s Town ward councillors have welcomed the decision by a Planning Inspector to refuse retrospective planning applications for five out of seven properties which were constructed the wrong way round on a housing development at Phoebe Lane, Siddal.

The controversy over the development has been continuing since 2004, when residents complained that the developers were building a number of properties the wrong way round and in the wrong positions, so that they were overlooking properties on New Lane. Eventually, the developers (Britannia) submitted a retrospective planning application for these properties. These applications were turned down in 2005 and the developers appealed to the Secretary of State, leading to a public inquiry in April and May 2006.
